If you're looking for the most enjoyable way to boost your SAT verbal score, these books should be at the top of your reading list:

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

A classic tale of mystery and intrigue, this story explores the dark and unpredictable duality of human nature as Dr. Jekyll battles Mr. Hyde, his evil alter ego who carries out his darkest impulses and desires.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelly

In a brilliant yet misguided attempt to conquer death, Victor Frankenstein's daring biological experiment takes a terrible turn, producing a terrifying creature of monstrous appearance and fierce temperament. While driven by the basic human desires for companionship and social acceptance, the monster takes terrible revenge upon his creator in his violent and unstoppable search for his origin and identity.

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

Set in the rigid and intolerant society of 17th Century Salem, Massachusetts, this story explores the extraordinary strength and independence of a young woman, Hester Prynne, who takes ownership of the ignoble mark of adultery, a large scarlet "A" that she is forced to wear as a mark of shame for the crime of having given birth out of wedlock.

The Tales of Edgar Allen Poe by Edgar Allen Poe

A pioneer of both the short story and the psychological thriller, Edgar Allan Poe's short stories explore what he called "the imp of the perverse,"that dark quality of human nature that piques our interest in the depraved and profane. With their melancholy imagery and exploration of the delicate human psyche, these stories will draw you into a world where the line between madness and reason are blurred almost beyond distinction.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontė

A dramatic story of love, romance, and heartbreak, Emily Brontė tells the story of the deeply passionate and profoundly troubled relationship between Catherine Earnshaw and the vagrant orphan Heathcliff whom her father adopts and raises as his own.
