Agnes Bruckner, Continued

This rising Hollywood starlet talks stunts and style

ANNA DIMOND, RED STAFFER,

The Interview, Continued

AD: Where did you shoot ‘Blood and Chocolate?’
AGNES: We shot in Bucharest, for about three months. It was actually my second time shooting there—the first movie I did was there, ‘The Shrunken City.’ My father lives in Hungary, and my mom’s from Russia, so I’ve traveled in Europe ever since I was little. It’s like my second home, it was so much fun, it is so beautiful, [and the movie] went well with the city.

Agnes Bruckner
"As far as the character is concerned,
the stunts ... were the hardest thing."

AD: It must get lonely living on location sometimes. Did you get to see your family during the shoot?
AGNES: I love to shoot in Europe, because I see my family a lot. My dad drove down every other week, he came to the set, he came out and we would check out the city -- it’s so nice to hang out with him there.

I always try to fly members of my family out when I’m away … After the first month of ‘Oh yeah! I’m away, and there’s no one here!,’ it’s like I kind of start to miss everyone … my car .. and the streets. It’s nice to be bale to fly my sister out, or my aunt, or whoever it is.

AD: Checking out your list of TV and movie credits, it looks like ‘Blood and Chocolate’ is far from your first action-packed fantasy production. So what’s drawing you to these films?
AGNES: I’m drawn to playing those kinds of roles, where it’s real, but it couldn’t really happen --it’s so much fun, it’s demanding, and challenging, putting myself through something that I might not be able to do [in real life].

But it kind of is a coincidence! It’s not like I call my agent, and say, “I only want psycho thrillers from now on!” But whatever scripts come along that I like, I push for, and audition, so there’s not a particular genre [that I go for].

I kind of think, the movies I’ve liked—I would always watch horror movies, our family was like, ‘watch whaever you want.’ So my older brother and I would rent Chuckie movies, and I would be terrified, I would make [my dolls] turn around and face the bed .. And also growing up with an older brother, guys are kind of more into horror, he would always get the Jasons, and Freddie Krueger, he even dressed as Freddie Krueger for Halloween.

I love that whole thing where you’re sitting in a chair at the movies and you don’t want to get scared, but it’s a thrill when you do—Even at ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,’ it’s so much fun to do that.

AD: You’re braver than I am!
AGNES: But when you’re shooting it, it’s so different, it’s really not scary. You’re being chased, or you’re chasing someone, and you are covered in fake blood—and I swear to god, it’s not scary, it’s actually kind of annoying:

You’re covering in sticky blood, and there’s someone chasing with you a knife but when you watch someone scream [on set], it’s completely different, it’s so not scary, it’s so bizarre, but that’s how it is. It’s the magic of movies, I guess!
