Celebs and DJs

Celebs + DJs:
The 'It' HobbyDJing was once a rarefied skill set confined to European turntable superstars, basement gurus and techies. But the attraction to DJs, vinyl records and dance music is now booming on U.S. turf, and everyone wants a piece -- especially trendsetting celebs. Lindsay Lohan showed she was down with the DJs at a magazine party in fall '06, when she pushed aside DJ Steve Aoki to touch some vinyl for herself.

Underground Girl
In recent months, U.K. sensation Lily Allen has been taking the U.S. by storm with her catchy songs and cheeky style. But before she got big as a singer, Allen and her BF were heavy into the DJ scene. Lucky for us, Allen still gets back to her roots, sharing some of her turntable skills at her own after parties. Is it tacky to spin records at your own party? We don't care -- this girl's got so much sass, she can get away with it.

Better Solo?It turns out Joel Madden -- Good Charlotte front man and former BF of both Hilary Duff and Nicole Richie -- can do more than date other celebs and sing about feelings. Joel's been reportedly DJing parties from LA to Vegas in a surprise embrace of vinyl. Not only are we relieved to hear that he can do better than his dating record would suggest, but we're also wondering if his turntable skills might be part of an eventual solo career?

Close Enough
It turns out that Joel Madden wasn't the only DJ-wannabe that Nicole Richie has fallen for. Madden might have been the ultimate goal, but DJ AM -- who's also known for making the dating rounds through Hollywood -- got Nicole so down with the DJs that she almost married him. So while we haven't yet seen Nicole try to spin a party, we know she's all about cozying up to the next guy who is.

Vinyl Envy
Even though she's clearly got some of her own DJ skills, Lindsay Lohan still couldn't resist buddying up with one of H'wood's hottest turntable talents, Samantha Ronson, for a few weeks of Paris-and-Nicole-style (ie, gag-worthy) BFF-dom. Some sources alleged that Linds and Ronson were more than just friends -- but regardless, the mutual lifestyle-worship was clear: Linds wanted some underground hipness that eludes superstars, and Ronson was plunged onto covers of gossip mags everywhere. Mission accomplished.

DJ in Disguise
Can indie rock get in artistic bed with electronic music? If your name is Carlos D. and you're the front man of the internationally acclaimed band Interpol, you can do whatever the heck you want. Carlos D., in true independent fashion, has started to show up in small venues around New York City and spin whole sets, unannounced. For the casual observer who recognizes him behind the turntables, it's a surprising -- and trendy -- taste of his music in a whole new way.

So Close
Since Paris gets anything she wants without really working, why should DJing be any different? We've already seen that Paris Hilton used to dig former pro skater Chad Muska because he was 'extreme.' But Paris, a big party girl herself, was another celeb who dated her way to the DJ scene. She got there via Muska, who's now known as much for his skating as for his turntabilism and related antics.

Dance Diva
With a 25 year career in which she's become synonymous with trendsetting, it's fitting that Madonna would be one of the celebs reaching for vinyl. Her latest hit single, 'Hung Up,' pays homage to DJ-driven dancing, but Madge's got the skills to back up the sound. Like Carlos D., she's been pulling the latest music-elite card and appearing, unannounced, in DJ booths around NYC. We're glad she'll have something to fall back on when her body sags beyond surgical reach and that leotard get-up isn't so cute anymore.

The DJ Strikes Back
We thought Mandy Moore might be above the trappings of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, but even she fell under the DJ spell with -- who else? -- DJ AM. (We weren't kidding. This guy gets around.) So is it his average LA style, mediocre looks or sexy skills on the turntables that gets 'em every time? Take a guess.

Spin-ster
With her London roots and eclectic taste, it's no surprise that Kelly Osbourne can rock the turntables as well as the guitar, the mic and the gossip pages. But Kelly's more than a vinyl moonlighter on other DJs' sets (cough, Lindsay). She was recently invited to spin her own session at London venue Circus.
