Reaching for Edge
Oh, Avril Lavgine. The girl who defined hard-rocking chicks and brought bad-ass to the pop mainstream is still going strong. She got married and bought a house in a posh part of Los Angeles, but just when we thought she'd lost her edge, Avril came back with 'Girlfriend.' It's hard to ignore a girl who insists she's 'damn precious' and goes after some dude's GF. Thank you, Avril, for reminding us what bratty really sounds like.

London Singing
How do sweet and badass mix for a combo that wins Brit Award nominations, lands a gig on Saturday Night Live and kicks off an international tour? Just ask Lily Allen, a sassy London export who's music's Next Big Thing. As a kid, Lily attended more than 13 schools between ages 5 and 15, and music became her only lasting friend. At 16, she knew it was also the only career she could imagine. She's won us over with catchy, reggae-infused melodies that disguise her sharp-tongued lyrics as light pop delights.

Goth Girl
So this one time at band camp (we mean 'youth camp'), a girl named Amy Lee was singing alone at the piano when a guy walked by, heard her voice and was so blown away he asked if they could play together. The duo recorded EPs, got discovered, got signed, added band members, lost a band member due to huffy prima donna-ness (we mean 'creative differences'), and went on to become a major worldwide act. It's true -- the Evanescence frontwoman got her start at camp, but she hasn't stopped since. Check out all of her emo-goth-rock videos right here.

Wow, Nelly
So far this year, Canadian Nelly Furtado has pretty much shattered all expectations with a seductive album, star-studded collaborations and exceptional videos that hinge on addictive beats, high-grade cinematography, and basically Nelly just looking hot, non-stop. When she broke onto the scene in 2000 with her debut, 'Whoa, Nelly!', she was everyone's favorite girl next door. But with her re-vamped look, clubbier sound and tight relationship with Timbaland, she's making a new, irrevocable mark on modern music.

Moment in the Sun
Most rock bands follow the usual lineup of all guys on the instrumentals, fronted by a sexy girl at the mic. But the Silversun Pickups challenge a lot of things about recent rock, starting with their band lineup, which features Nikki Monninger on bass, right alongside the guys. With a cool, California sound and nostalgia-tinged videos like 'Lazy Eye,' the group corners moments we've all had, but adds a dreamy sheen over the familiar for a fresh feel.

The Color of Cred
Some girls try to be badass (ahem, Paris Hilton), some think they are badass (that's for you, Avril Lavgine), and some girls can't help being anything but badass. Pink was seemingly born with edge, talent and a raw sensibility that's won her a Grammy, fans worldwide, and total street cred. She started hitting the clubs at just 13, and was making music professionally soon after. Her debut album alone went multi-platinum, and after continuing successes, marriage to a pro Moto X rider and style that's included a faux-hawk, we've got nothing but respect for this rockin' chick.

Bad Girl, Rad Music
Amy Winehouse may have made her mark in England over the past seven years -- both with her talent and her rowdy personal life
-- but we finally get to enjoy her music stateside now that her sophomore album, 'Back to Black,' is getting major airplay. Amy's upbringing in a rough London neighborhood and exposure to jazz figure heavily into her sultry sound that's winning fans across genres, on both sides of the pond.More on RED:

Cold Nights, Hot Music
Sweden may sound exotic, but for the four girls of Sahara Hotnights, high school was still boring enough that they sought excitement in music just to deal. Their 1997 debut EP 'Suits Anyone Fine' met big applause in Europe, and catapulted them into the spotlight. Their success snowballed from a Swedish record deal, to a UK record deal, to Swedish Grammy nominations, and finally landed them in the U.S. in mid-2002, where they've found even more acclaim. Get a taste of these fiery Nordic rockers with 'Hot Night Crash.'

Ever Adorable
With a perfect mix of sweetness and mischief, the trio Everlife (sisters Amber Ross, Sarah Ross and Julia Ross) pump out guitar-driven rock songs that hang on catchy hooks. In just few years of making music together, the girls hit on an accessible blend of pop ballad and raw rock 'n' roll. So far, they've gotten air time on Radio Disney, and have been included on multiple compilations. We can't wait to see where they'll go next.
